C'Mon phpbb is not that bad , nor mybb
i like both of them, but mostly phpBB It helps me to create and its easy to use.

I know I'm reviving an old topic here, hope you don't mind.

I like PHPBB, because it's more customisable and free! I've never used AutoMod, what's the point, I like coding...

Have any of you ever tried XenForo? It's newish, but it looks clean, fresh and is easy to set up.

but doesn't xenforo cost money? these two are the main free ones, but XenForo and IPB cost, even though they are much nicer...

It does cost money, but it's loads better than vBulletin and IPB. As I said before, PHPBB is my favourite free one. (It's also the only forum software I've ever had a successful forum on)

I've tested MyBB and SMF but I much prefer phpBB. And when 3.1 comes out most of the complaints about installing Mods will vanish with the addition of Hooks, adding Mods should then be as easy as it is on MyBB.
And in my Opinion the permissions on phpBB are awesome, you can really fine tune them as you wish and I've never found them hard to understand or use.
