My SD drive is damaged

Postby Sweet Simplicity » 07 Mar 2011, 10:01

My SD drive is damaged, I think something is stuck in it, or sticking out of place, because I put an SD in once and I had great difficulty getting the computer to read it, and afterwards removing it from the slot. And the SD card also came out slightly damaged. Do you've any ideas on how I could check this before sending it to a shop to get fixed?

Is it a laptop or desktop?
Also provide a model if you can

It's a laptop, Acer Aspire 5920.
I think.

By damage you mean the pins were out of place?
For the most part card readers are on board (the motherboard) which would require an entire replacement of the motherboard which would be about $275 in your case.

Does it give an error message, or is the problem purely physical?

Contrary to belief, the brand of the computer doesn't say much about how it performs. Typically the boards are the same, just with different features, and such.
There are some models that may be notorious for a commonly found problem, such as the HP Pavilion dv6000, with their notoriously weak motherboards.

Also you brought up a good point Michael, USB SD Card readers are available for as low as $4

im not saying the brand name tells of the performance. i am referring to the overall quality of the computers. pretty much all the consumer level laptops from hp (pavilion) suck, while the better series (elitebook, probook) are oik.
but with acer, everything is crap!
sorry acer

Find my acer works pretty well, I think the damage was inflicted by myself or my sister.
I'm looking into a SD reader.

Thanks for the help. If I can pay a few quid for a usb reader rather than spend a large amount on getting it fixed that's good for me. :)

Following your suggestions I went on ebay found a suitable adapter and it works fantastically and I only paid 3 or 4 euros for it! Including postage.

It reads SD, Micro SD, Mini SD, MS, and another memory card with a funny symbol.
