My 2011 PC...

Postby LionOfNarnia » 23 Feb 2011, 12:06

After my Packard Bell iMedia 'died' due to a NASTY trojan picked up from a streaming-sports site over chrimbo, I blew €700 on something a bit tasty in the January sales...

i7 CPU 12GB ram 1GB NVidia graphics card Coolermaster Case
40GB SSD boot drive, 1TB & 2TB WD 'Green Caviar' internal sata HDs, 3 x WD 'My Book' 1TB externals for back-ups.
Logitech G110 keyboard, Performance MX mouse, 550w 5.1 sound, webcams, gamepads.
24" Samsung Monitor (1920x1200) plus Samsung 32" HD TV (1920x1080) as secondary.
Windows 7 Pro (legal!) O/S. Fave browser is Firefox but I use Chrome from time to time & IE when I have to.
Installed games - FarCry 2, CoD Black Ops Hawks 2 & Oblivion. I NEVER play online! (Haven't played at all in about a month, if truth be told!)

When I get back from my 'day job' (Industrial Enginner at a HUGE steel stockholder in Amsterdam harbours) I park myself in front of it and work til bedtime writing stuff for my own forum, answering emails & having fun on other peoples' forums.
...With a few beers and a collection of Hollands' Finest Greenery to keep my inspired & loose ;)

Usually listening to 'Planet Rock', although I reckon I could make a better playlist from my own rock collection - 25,000 files, 175GB of them :D

So far I'm yet to get the CPU above 40%, even playing CoD with everything to max.

8 x 2,8Ghz really ROCKS!

@shovenose
I had the same graphics card as you in my current PC until I got the new one I posted about earlier :D

Aslan, 700 EUR is roughly 950 USD. You got one hell of a deal. Nice computer there, I'm a big fan of coolermaster.

Oblivion rocks by the way.

No backstreet-deal either!

Came from a Dutch chain called (Surprisingly) COMPUTERLAND.

I didn't get the full specs I posted for €699 though - the SSD boot disk, 2TB HD & 2 x 4GB Ram was my own 'pimping'- well, ya gotta, don't ya?

That's still not bad.

Oh yea, computer "pimping" is the best. I wish I had the money to upgrade all of my ram in my computers.

Man, never mind computers, as an oil-in-the-blood engineer, pimping ANYTHING is kewl!

My Beast is pimped - LeoVince 'Evo II' pipes (no baffles!) braided lines, Xenon conversion, carbon fibre parts, Kehein damper etc

My Blowpipe darts are pimped - started making carbon fibre-shafted target darts recently

...even my bloody computer chair is pimped! - I have a pillow attached behind my back for comfort and the armrests are modded to hold a tinnie!

That's awesome. I want to start pimping out my BMX bike this summer, hopefully I'll come up with some funds somehow. I really need some new handlebars, and it really needs to loose some weight.

Hah! the only weight that needs lost around here is due to superb Dutch & Belgian beer, in copious quantities.

Yep. Put me in the "Sumo" category.

No, as I said, I'm just an old-fashioned beer-hoover - in a country where the 2nd most popular greeting is "Biertje?"

The PC has it's cooling fans, I have my chilled, high-potency 'liquid bread' & Tokers' chest.

(Did that come close enough to getting back on topic, SN?)

Glad about that.

I have a serious question, anyway...

The PC that 'died', it's nearly ready to be re-started, BUT-

The internals are CAKED with a mixture of 'the usual household stuff' plus cat-hairs and worst of all nicotine/tar. I usually use my electric shaver brush to (gently) clean my internals but this one is too much of a mess to even think about doing that.

So, the question is,

What is the best way to clean the really nasty sticky crap from the motherboard/fans/psu etc without damaging the circuitry?

many people say not too but a vaccuum works fine.

but a power air compressor with a nozzle works the best!

I don't have a compressor at home & it's not practical to try to get the PC to work (by Beast)

I'm surprised there isn't kind of commercial aerosol spray available for the purpose - I was thinking thay maybe something like brake cleaner or contact cleaner might work, some solvent that evaporates fast and leaves no residue?

I have used a vacuum cleaner before, to get the 'fluff' away after brushing, but I made a tube extension for it out of half-inch fuel-line - smaller, softer, more flexible thus safer & easier to use. I just gaffertaped it to the end of the standard hose.
