There are cans of just air, they are specifically meant to clean computers, to get the dust out of the PC and anything off of the keyboard. I image any local office supply store would have it.

Here is an example:

Yeah, I know about that stuff but it won't help.

I've got loadz of really nasty sticky gunk in there that won't just come away by itself.

If it's in your fan, or on your hardware, you can always use tweezers to pull out the dust. That followed with a little blast from an aerosol can should clean you right up.

I've seen computers in the shop where I've had to do that. We have an air compressor, but it does nearly the same thing. After you pull out the big chucks from out of your fan, it's all peaches after that.
If you do this, make sure your computers off, and you hold your fan still while spraying :ninja:

i did an experiment once with 20 fans.

not a single one was damaged.

dont bother holding the fans, let em spin :)

The point of holding the fan, isn't to not damage them, but to let an even airflow through that isn't interrupted by the spinning fan.

Ah, well it's good to know that doesn't damage the fan. It's just more convenient for me to hold it.

What about the back-emf generated BY the fan-motor when it's spun by the air?

All those backwards electrons have to expend their energy somewhere, if it's in the motherboard something could get fried.

I'd recommend locking the fan, just in case.

Of course, this only applies if the fan is still connected during cleaning!

i personally disconnect fans from the motherboard for that very reason! if theyre connected on the power supply, (which is way more robust), i leave them connected

Agreed!

(Maybe there aren't SO many difference between all this micro-electronic stuff and the stuff I work on every day - 3-phase many-kilowat overhead cranes - after all!)

I told you it was gungy!

Cat-hair & old ciggy smoke are a bad combo

But in combination with my shaver-cleaner brush, and a hoover, this did the trick...

The PC is now sitting close to the targets on the indoor range, but is not really useable yet as the wireless card I bought yesterday refuses to instal properly

Well, 2 months on and it's still running like a treat.

There's less cat hair and MUCH less ciggie smoke where it sits now ;)

But maybe it's a waste for such a decent PC to only be used for LRMs & playing 'Planet Rock'?
